Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a national scheme for young people between the ages of 14 and 25. BGSG offers the Award at Bronze and Silver levels.

To complete the award participants must complete four sections: service, physical recreation, skill and expedition. The Scheme develops fortitude of character and ensures a well-rounded community engagement. The service section allows participants to enhance their community, activities such as conservation, running youth groups and first aid can all count towards the Award.

The skills section encourages participants to take up or develop a skill. Almost any activity in which improvement can be achieved counts towards this section. Physical recreation includes individual or team sports, but also more exotic activities such as sailing, powerlifting, and Zumba. Each of these sections is undertaken regularly for a period of 3-6 months.

Participants also take part in an expedition. The expedition sees the teams fend for themselves in the wilds of the UK, camping, cooking on gas stoves and team work are all features of this section.
